What is an Electrocardiography Certified Technician?
ECG/EKG Certified Technicians, also known as Electrocardiograph technicians or Cardiovascular technicians, perform EKGs readings, Holter Monitoring, Lead Placement and Stress Tests (usually on a treadmill) and assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and blood vessel issues. EKG Technicians operate and maintain EKG machines to read a patient's cardiovascular health and perform a series of tests to ensure accurate measurements are taken.

Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG) provides valuable information to the cardiologist about the electrical activity in the heart. The EKG is a highly specialized and technical tool for assessing cardiac function and diagnosing cardiac disease and is a valuable addition to advancing your medical career.
RCI's Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG) Technician Certification Course is a Nationally and California state approved 50-hour program completed over 6 days. This course prepares students for cardiac monitoring including Holter, 12 Lead EKG, and Stress Testing. Successful completion of this course will qualify the student to sit for and take the ASPT (American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians) or NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) national EKG certification examination.
I took the EKG course and was beyond satisfied. The people in the front are so kind and helpful and the admissions counselor is straightforward but still warm (the word that comes to mind is "jolly"). My instructor for the EKG course was really knowledgeable and always open to questions. She's been doing this for a while, so she really knew how to pace the lectures.

- Discuss the sites of action potential generation and propagation through the cardiac conduction system. Contrast the effect of parasympathetic with sympathetic stimulation of the cardiac conduction system.
- Correlate the actions of the heart represented by the p wave, PR interval, QRS complex, and T-wave.
- Choose proper placement of electrodes based on ECG mechanics.
- Calculate a heart rate from an ECG strip
- Analyze how the following rhythms would appear on an ECG strip.
- Analyze how the following dysrhythmias would appear on an ECG strip.
- Describe the interventions intended to correct the effects of insufficient tissue perfusion associated with dysrhythmia.
- EKG Interpretation: identification of waveforms on rhythm strip; Measurement of waveforms on rhythm strip; determining heart rate from rhythm strips.
- Recognition of sinus rhythms: 1. Normal sinus rhythm 2. Sinus Bradycardia 3. Sinus tachycardia 4. Sinus Arrhythmia.
- Atrial rhythms: interpretation, causes and treatment modalities of abnormal atrial rhythms
- Ventricular rhythms: interpretation, causes and treatment modalities of abnormal ventricular rhythms
- Junctional rhythms: interpretation, causes and treatment modalities of abnormal junctional rhythms
- Atrial fibrillation; premature ventricular contractions; ventricular fibrillation; asystole; ventricular standstill
- Interpretation of Heart Blocks.
- Recognize EKG findings of Myocardial Infarction and ischemia
- Holter Monitoring: leads placement, procedure, analysis
- Reading of artificial Pacemakers
- How to perform interventions associated with common arrhythmias, especially life-threatening arrhythmias.
- Students must be at least 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
